How many categories do you have for your blog? When writing a post, always strive to select categories you’ve already created as opposed to creating another one. For example: If you’re writing a post about a new Adobe product, do you really need an Adobe category, or could you just include it in Software? Chances are, Software will do just fine.
When you’re about to create a new category, always think “Will someone actually want to click on this category?” If you can’t imagine people regularly clicking on that category to narrow down to posts contained within it, scrap the idea and generalize. Creating too many categories clutters your blog and turns off readers from choosing to click on just one category. Continue reading Choose Your Categories Carefully
Here’s an effortless way to earn more money with your blog. The aLinks plugin for WordPress takes common words and phrases you use and automatically turns them into links. Sounds simple enough, but the possibilities are almost endless.
The first and most obvious technique here is to take commonly used phrases on your blog and turn them into affiliate links. I frequently write about blogging, webmasters, hosting, and other general IT-related subjects, and you can see a few of my aLink Keywords in the image below. These all link to their respective affiliate programs, and have each generated a little bit of extra income. Continue reading Earn Affiliate Revenue with aLinks
JohnChow.com is one of the many blogs I read about blogging, and he’s certainly one of the most popular. John has been a very successful blogger, and is a leader in the field. But sometimes the leaders stray off path and start to turn off their regular readers.
John Chow is an excellent example of this. His blog tagline is “Make Money Online with John Chow dot Com.” Naturally you would think that the blog is about Making Money Online, right? Well if you go to Johnchow.com right now, you won’t see any posts about *how* to make any money online. At the time of me writing this, his last 18 posts tell me nothing about how to make money online; the reason people read his blog.
There are posts about how to avoid income taxes, posts about t-shirts from events, children, nanny services, misc tech industry, contests, and of course John bragging about how much money he made and how many RSS subscribers he has, etc. While I certainly don’t mind the occasional off-topic ramble (in fact I really enjoyed the posts on how to avoid income taxes,) this is not the reason I read the blog.

My posting frequency is very sporadic. Why? I have a problem. No, I don’t really have ADD, but it certainly seems like it sometimes.
In the “Your Drafts” section of WordPress, I have so many posts sitting up there waiting to completed I don’t even feel like counting them right now. Here is my method:
- Get an idea for a post
- Log on to WordPress and begin post
- Finish about 3 sentences of the post
- Get an idea for another post
- Click “Save”, then “Write Post”
- Begin new post
- GOTO 1
The loop does not stop. I don’t know if this is a problem with very many bloggers, but I’m positive I’m not the only one. In fact the only reason I’m finishing this post is because I promised myself I wouldn’t go to bed until I’m done, and I’m really tired.
Recently many of my posts have been about blogging contests, and it seems they keep coming in faster than I can write about them. Hopefully they’re helping all my fellow bloggers win a prize or two, but I should start cutting back on the contests soon.
This time, JohnCow.com (a hilarious parody of JohnChow.com,) is giving away an excellent prize. As the post title suggests, you can win an iPhone, PS3, Wii or XBOX360 just by writing about the post on your own blog and linking back to certain links. A post that looks like this should be just fine:
“Over at JohnCow.com they must have the coolest web hosting provider in the pasture. These guys are having a cowpetition and are giving away a $500 prize! Here’s your chance to win a Playstation 3, an Xbox360, a Nintendo Wii, an iPhone .. you name it, they’ll pay it! Don’t miss out and check out their mad cow blog!â€?
After you write the post, contact them so they can check the post and add you to the list.
