Woot! for Dummies

I find myself often explaining to people what Woot! is, and it’s not always easy. People can’t seem to grasp the idea of a store only selling one item per day, occasionally selling more (Woot-off,) and especially trying to explain what a Bag-of-Crap is.

Woot! finally released “If You Don’t Know Woot By Now.” A great, quick explanation of what Woot is, what they do, and how they work. Now all I have to do is reference this page when I try to explain it to someone.

If you aren’t familiar with Woot, visit the page. You’ll likely become addicted to their awesome deals, catchy podcasts, weekly contests, and great sense of humor in each post. Not to mention become very frustrated when trying to buy something during the next Woot-off, especially if it’s a Bag of Crap. Last time they sold one they had a peak of 30,000 requests PER SECOND! I’d love to see their data center.

The “guide” explains the multiple features of Woot, including how to know when it’s a Woot-off, The Product Stats feature, the “Discuss This Product” section, wine.woot, Wootcasts, Bag of Crap, and Side Deals.

A woot-off is one of those magical times of the month where you get to easily spend every penny you have on stuff that you may or may not use. To get the full effect, you can’t sleep for about 48 hours, or you’re likely to miss a bunch of really good deals.

Not to mention, you might miss the infamous “Bag of Crap.”

I see some orange flashing lights on the main page â€“ what do they mean?
No, you aren’t seeing a side effect from your allergy medication. You have found a Woot-Off, a short term frenzied mutation of our product posting procedure. In Woot-Off mode, a new product is launched immediately after the sellout of the previous deal. There is a half-Woot-life of 12 hours maximum on any product within a Woot-Off that does not sell out. The number of Woot-Off items, sequence, and quantity will not be announced. When Woot-Off mode is over, the orange lights will disappear and our normal schedule will resume. Depending on its success, this may be a mode we would go into once or twice a month for a relatively short duration of time (24-72 hours generally.)

They’re by Adidas and called ZX750. Cool name, too. If you think they’re ugly, then you’re wrong. Dead wrong. I just ordered them from Finish Line, and they’re the only place you can get them. They’re on sale for $40 right now.

The ThinkGeek 8-bit Tie

For April Fools day, Thinkgeek.com (one of my favorite stores) supposedly offered a really cool new tie design they called the “8-bit tie.” Understanding it was only a joke, many people wrote Thinkgeek saying they really wanted the tie (myself included,) and to produce it.

After a ton of requests, Thinkgeek finally folded, and said that they are going to make it. Here’s the message on their site:

Hey! You! Quit emailing us to make this for REAL already We promise, we’ll make it. In fact we are already working on it. You’ve just forced our hand! Click the ‘email me when available’ link above to get notified! Thanks! I guess the joke is on us this year :p
